When is National Margarita Day?

National Margarita Day is February 22nd. Also known as International Margarita Day (because the whole world loves margaritas), no one knows for sure who started the holiday, but we’re happy to raise a glass.

If you were hoping there was more than one answer to “when is National Margarita Day,” we’ve got you covered: National Tequila Day is July 24th.

What Does a Margarita Taste Like?

With all of the different types of margaritas to choose from, you might expect there to be no answer to this question. But that’s not the case. What does a margarita taste like? There are five key tastes:

  • Sweet
  • Sour
  • Salty
  • Bitter
  • Umami

The presence of lime juice and triple sec add a citrusy flavor to most margaritas, and you’ll definitely taste the tequila (which is why you should use a favorite tequila).

Are Margaritas Gluten Free?

Margaritas are gluten free, unless you add something unusual into the mix. Margaritas are gluten free because they use tequila, an alcohol made from agave.

How to Order a Margarita

If you’re new to margaritas, you shouldn’t think too hard about how to order a margarita. Look over the menu, find your flavor options, and let your server or bartender know what flavor you want and whether you’d like it frozen or on the rocks. If you just order a strawberry margarita, they’ll usually ask whether you want it frozen or not.

If you have a few National Margarita Days under your belt, you might want to get more creative or specific. Here are some tips for getting a margarita just how you like it:

  • Tell them the type of tequila you want.
  • Specify whether you want it with a salted rim, sugared rim, or a plain rim.
  • Specify the garnish you’d like (maybe you prefer a lime on your strawberry margarita).

Still not sure you know how to order a margarita? Ask your server or bartender, and they’ll be happy to help.

Different Types of Margaritas

There are as many different types of margaritas as there are flavors (we have a strawberry margarita recipe below). But whatever flavor you choose, there tends to be 2 main kinds of margaritas:

  • Frozen
  • On the Rocks

If you’re celebrating National Margarita Day, you should choose the type of margarita you like most, but you should also know that most margarita lovers regard “on the rocks” as the true margarita.

Essential Margarita Ingredients List

For the most basic drink, you’ll have a very simple margarita ingredients list (make that shopping list in your Fetch app and start saving on every grocery trip with just a snap of your receipt):

  • Tequila
  • Triple Sec
  • Lime (fresh juice and slices for garnish)
  • Salt
  • Agave syrup (optional)

You can find these at any good grocery store, making it easy to have them on-hand when you want a crisp, cool margarita. Just make sure you have Fetch open, so you can ensure your margarita ingredients is earning you the most points possible. Hint: Check your in-app offers when making your shopping list to give your Fetch balance a big points boost.

That margarita ingredients list is in order from most to least. Your classic margarita has a 3:2:1 ratio of tequila to triple sec to lime. Simply combine into a shaker with ice, shake til the outside of the shaker is frosted, and then strain into a glass with a salted rim.

That’s the classic, but the most popular version is probably the strawberry margarita. Our recipe is below.

How to Make a Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks

A strawberry margarita recipe is going to start with your classic margarita ingredients list and then add in:

  • Sliced fresh strawberries
  • Granulated sugar
  • Agave syrup (not optional here)
  • Fresh orange juice

From the archives of our favorite recipes at Fetch, here’s how to make a strawberry margarita on the rocks (2 servings):

  1. Slice half a cup of fresh strawberries into 4-5 slices each, then place them into a bowl.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar and stir until they berries are all covered in sugar.
  3. Let the berries sit for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Transfer the contents of the bowl (berries, sugar, and juice) to a cocktail shaker.
  5. Muddle the strawberries.
  6. Add tequila (4 oz), lime juice (2 oz), triple sec (1 oz), and orange juice (1/2 oz) into the shaker.
  7. Add in the agave syrup and a pinch of salt.
  8. Fill the shaker halfway with ice, shake for 20-30 seconds.
  9. Strain into a glass (salt or sugar the rim if you prefer).

Strawberry margaritas (on the rocks or frozen) make for a great mocktail. Your mileage may vary, but we like a mixture of limeade and orange juice to sub in for the tequila.

Does Margarita Mix Have Alcohol?

Margarita mix does not have alcohol in it. In fact, margarita mix has just about everything you need to make a margarita except for the alcohol, making it a great mixer to have on-hand if you like to offer a quick and easy margarita to your guests.

Does Margarita Mix Go Bad?

While your tequila can last forever, margarita mix can go bad. First, be sure to refrigerate your margarita mix after opening. Then it’s recommended that you use your mix within 6-12 months of opening. That’s a pretty wide range, and you should trust your gut (or your nose) if you think your margarita mix has gone bad earlier.

If you think adding the tequila can stop your margarita mix from going bad, think again. It’s recommended you drink any margaritas made with your mix within 48 hours.

Can You Make a Margarita with Vodka?

Maybe tequila isn’t your go-to liquor… or maybe you’re just out and National Margarita Day snuck up on you. While we would hesitate to say that you can make a margarita with vodka, you can make a drink very similar. When you sub vodka in for tequila in a strawberry margarita recipe, you get a drink that shifts the focus from the flavor of the alcohol to the flavors of everything else.

Vodkaritas, as they’re often called, are perfect if you’re getting really creative with flavor profiles or you’re mixing a drink for someone who doesn’t much like the taste of alcohol. So, you can make a margarita with vodka, just don’t let any bartenders catch you calling it a margarita.

How Many Margaritas Does it Take to Get Drunk?

If you’re wondering how many margaritas it’ll take to get drunk, we have a very helpful answer: it depends. If you don’t drink often and are on the smaller side, it may only take one margarita. If you’re a seasoned drinker, it could take a couple margaritas before you’re drunk. The margaritas we made above used 2 ounces of tequila each, and tequila is typically 80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Just remember, even if you’ve only had half a margarita and don’t think you’re feeling it, be sure to get someone to drive you home.
